Many times, due to the high costs associated with getting a degree, the discussion about whether or not going to college is worth it has come up. Can we all get by or live a life we envision with a high school education, or should we consider biting the bullet and pay for college? My initial thought is that employers are far more likely to hire someone with a college degree. However, with a tough job market, is can be difficult to have student loans to pay off if you don’t find a solid position after graduation which is something that can’t be guaranteed.
If I were to give someone advice who was just coming out of college and worried about student loan debt, it would be this: Start off in a community college! You can get a great education there and transfer credits to a university. Sure you are missing the freshman college experience, but this gives you the opportunity to takes classes in different areas you are interested in and find out what you really want to major in. I signed up for a 4 year school and didn’t really know what I wanted to study at first. The business degree I got was versatile, but I could have taken some of those 100 or even 200 level courses more cost-effectively at my community college.
At the end of the day, just having a high school diploma works out for some, but generally furthering your education is going to help you live a more satisfying life.
