POSITION:      Removal Defense Attorney

WAGE:             $50,000 – $52,500 per year (DOE)

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

IRCO Legal Services envisions a safe, welcoming, and inclusive Oregon for immigrants and refugees. Our work is focused on creating more access to immigration legal services that provides security and stability to our most vulnerable community members.

We seek to hire a full time immigration Removal Defense Attorney (“RDA”). The RDA will provide direct representation to immigrants and refugees who are facing removal (also known as deportation).

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Research, prepare, and litigate cases for low income clients facing removal
  • Provide monthly pro se workshops to those facing removal but who do not immediately qualify for direct representation under the Equity Corps program
  • Conduct staff and community education and training on removal and other immigration issues
  • Support IRCO Legal Services and the larger organization in coordinating an agency wide response to immigration issues
  • Communicate and collaborate with immigration community navigators and local non-profit legal service providers, in particular, Innovation Law Lab which serves as the Equity Corps clearinghouse
  • Assist with other projects and duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
  • A member in good standing with the Oregon State Bar or another state bar
  • Experience in immigration law- minimum 2 years’ experience preferred
  • Experience working with immigrant and refugee communities
  • Must be bilingual; fluent in another language other than English (Spanish preferred)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and online legal research

  • Strong intercultural, interpersonal and organizational communication skills
  • Punctuality, good attendance, and ability to work flexible hours to meet the availability of clients
  • Ability to use basic office equipment, telephone, copy machine, fax machine, and computer
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, drive, talk on the phone and/or use computer for long periods
  • Possess a valid driver's license and verification of current auto-insurance, and have full use of automobile during work hours
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, committees, and volunteer activities to support IRCO’s goals
