Disability Determination Services (DDS) within Aging and People with Disabilities (APD), part of the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) is looking to hire three dedicated Physical Medical Consultants to join our talented team. About the program

The mission of the Oregon Disability Determination Services (DDS) is "To provide Oregonians who apply for disability benefits prompt and accurate decisions. We will act with respect, compassion and courtesy." Our mission is that of Department of Human Services (DHS) "to help Oregonians in their own communities achieve well-being and independence through opportunities that protect, empower, respect choice and preserve dignity." The DDS provides eligible Oregonians with SSDI and SSI disability benefits providing financial benefit and medical coverage to beneficiaries enabling them to lead independent lives.

DDS is a division within Aging and People with Disabilities (APD). DDS has statewide responsibility to determine eligibility of Social Security disability benefits under Title II, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and Title XVI, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the citizens of Oregon.

The disability program is under the auspices of the Social Security Administration (SSA). DDS makes disability determinations based on medical, vocational and legal regulations.

The DDS is responsible for evaluating approximately 55,000 claims annually and for rendering a determination on whether the claimant is disabled or not as established by federal guidelines.

What you will do:

You will:

  • Review and evaluate medical and non-medical evidence pertaining to physical impairments and determine impairment severity and remaining physical functional capacity, completing necessary electronic forms.
  • Consult with supervisors, branch managers, disability analysts and other staff on medical issues needing clarification, on evaluation of medical impairment severity.
  • Contact treating sources to resolve conflicts in medical evidence of record and to clarify evidence in physical impairment cases.  Attend training needed to maintain professional license and competence.

Working conditions:

  • Remote work or alternative work location may be considered in filling this position. The ability to report to Salem is required when business or operational needs are dependent on onsite activities.
  • DDS operates Monday – Friday and offers flexible work hours.
  • You will use a computer daily.
  • You will have frequent interaction with fellow medical consultants, analysts, and clerical staff within DDS.
  • You will have infrequent telephone interaction with the community of physicians statewide.
  • No direct patient contacts.

What you need to qualify: Minimum Qualifications

A Doctorate degree in (agency determines at time of recruitment) from an accredited university AND possession of a current, active license to practice medicine (MD, DO, PhD, PsyD) in the State of Oregon; AND two years clinical practice experience, at least one year that is post-residency (medical);

OR

Two years supervised clinical practice experience, at least one year that is post Master’s degree (Psychology).

Essential Attributes

  • Three years of clinical experience.
  • Valid, Oregon medical license (medical or osteopathic doctor)

Additional Requirements

Finalists for this position will be subject to a computerized criminal history and abuse check.  Adverse background information will be reviewed and could result in withdrawal of a conditional job offer or termination of employment.

Successful candidates for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following convictions are likely to result in disqualification for this position: Felony Convictions, Computer theft, identify theft and fraud. CJIS Clearance completed at the time conditional job offer.

In addition to the State of Oregon background check process, individuals selected for positions with the Disability Determination services (DDS) will go through a complete federal background investigation. A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee receives credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records, and systems. A pre-screen conducted through SSA Office of Deputy Commissioner for Human Resources (DCHR). If the pre-screen is favorable, a job offer is extended. However, the job offer is still contingent upon a full suitability clearance through DCHR.

The Oregon Department of Human Services does not offer visa sponsorship. Within three days of hire, you will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States. ODHS will use E-Verify to confirm that you are authorized to work in the United States.
