Meet Jane, pdxMindShare’s January Speaker!

We at pdxMindShare are about to kick off our 2015 season of monthly career-focused workshops and networking events. Each event has different workshop speakers, experts in his or her field,  addressing topics designed to help professionals advance their careers whether it be securing a job, new position, career change or even a promotion. The idea is to equip everyone with useful tools to help them achieve career goals in addition to being able to meet other Portland professionals and even some employers. Events are the third Wednesday of each month at the very lovely and accommodating Trader Vic’s on the corner of NW Glisan and 12th. You can enjoy a beverage and some wonderful food from the happy hour menu while  you learn and mingle!

On January 21st, we are very excited to welcome first-time MindShare speaker Jane Boutwell, a corporate trainer and communications consultant,  to present. She will be exploring the question we  are so often asked “Why You?” and how to effectively answer it under multiple circumstances. To learn more about the presentation, please visit the event page. Otherwise, we’d like to introduce you to Jane!

Please tell us about yourself.
I’m a coach.

And what I loved most about coaching, were the visible “ah ha” moments I observed on the faces of the athletes… like watching a player shoot a one handed lay-in for the first time or the crunch time, game winning basket!

As a communication coach, equally thrilling for me is when a self described introvert successfully gives a presentation in public, AND, can imagine doing it again!  Using communication fundamentals, I teach people how to be more effective communicators:  by helping people overcome their fear of speaking in public, or providing tools to prepare for an elevator pitch, or simply making daily conversations more clear.

What will you be covering in my presentation?
Learn how to successfully prepare and answer the “why you” question in your next interview.  It is critical you communicate that you are not only the ideal candidate for a job, but that you are a perfect fit for the organization.

  • Know:  WHY you are asked the “why you” question.
  • Research:  Go beyond the job description, know the organization
  • Communicate:  Mesh your skills and competencies with job & organization
  • Key:  Non-verbal awareness

Why should Portland professionals attend?
We live in a global society, where any company can attract and hire any person anywhere in the world.  It’s not enough for you to have skills and competencies for a job, additionally, you have to be able to sell yourself.  Selling yourself includes communicating to the interviewer WHY you are the best candidate for the job!
